Take a look at Tony Morrison’s airfare secrets. See, Tony Morrison is a real secret weapon when it comes to flying for no money or very little money compared to what you would normaly pay for a flight. Whenever I am about to fly back home I refer to everything Tony has to say and I suggest that you do the same thing. More so, whenever my partner wants to fly home, which is a 9 hour flight to Europe, Tony’s insights have proven to be invaluable in saving money on almost $600 per person on airplane tickets. This is why you should take a look Tony Morrison’s “Aifrare Secrets”, here.

Rule 240: This article from Aviation.com explains Rule 240: “that if an airline [can’t] get you to your destination on time, it [is] required to put you on a competitor’s flight if it would get you there faster than your original airline’s next flight.” - Northwest Airlines will put you on another airline, in first class if necessary, if your original flight is delayed 60 minutes or longer. (This rule may no longer exist but airline companies will provide alternatives…read Rule 240 article for further explaination).

– but not every airline calls it Rule 240

For example, if you check on Delta Air Lines' domestic contract of carriage, you'll find something called Rule 240 that promises the airline "will exercise reasonable efforts to carry you and your baggage according to Delta's published schedules and the schedule reflected on your ticket." But if you're flying internationally, Delta has no Rule 240. Instead, the 240 provisions are contained in rules 80, 87 and 95 of its international contract.

Get better deals by not buying directly from the airline. This article, suggests contacting a travel and checking the newspaper for savings. Some agents have affiliate agreements with larger travel companies to negotiates lower rates on their behalf, “often, tour operators will advertise ridiculously low fares and package deals in the Sunday travel section.”

Fly First class at Coach Price. Coach tickets can be booked under codes like YUPP, QUPP, or Z, which award ticketholders automatic upgrades to first class. Rick Seaney, president of FareCompare, “a lot of times the YUPPs are matching some sort of low-cost carrier in a particular market.” According to the article, in 2006, a “round trip flight from Dallas to St. Louis on American Airlines, the YUPP fare is $278 — that’s nearly $1,500 cheaper than a regular seat in first class and more than a $1,000 less than the most expensive seat in coach.”

Find out which days equal the cheapest tickets. Wendy Perrin’s The Perrin Post “You’ll find cheaper fares and greater seat availability if you fly on a Saturday and return on a Tuesday, instead of going from Thursday to Sunday or Friday to Monday.”

Fly by less known airlines. You won’t be able to fly direct from some of these airlines, but a good way to travel on a budget.

Fly foreign. You may fly cheaper by flying with your destination airline than American.

Re-work your travel schedule. Arrange your travel schedule so that you’re always flying into the cheapest cities.

Understand refund policies. Simple

Buy consolidated. Buy your tickets from a consolidator. A guide found on wikiHow can walk you through step-by-step. HERE

Depart from a larger city to avoid bigger prices. Can save you hundreds of dollars verifying ticket prices and weighing out the costs.

Save hundreds of dollars on an international flight.
Find out if it's a code share. When an airline and its foreign partner both sell seats on the same flight (making it a code share), one carrier's fares could be substantially lower, so check prices on both. The same seat on the same New York-Hong Kong flight could cost hundreds of dollars LESS.

Update: Fly courier. This can save you half the cost if not allow you to even fly free!

Interest Relief: Don't Pay for 6 Months!

Interest Relief

If you're unemployed or not earning much money, you may be temporarily unable to make payments on your government student loans. If so, you could be eligible for Interest Relief.

This help is available for Canada Student Loans, Integrated Loans and loans programs operated by some provinces. Contact the National Student Loans Service Centre (NSLSC) and/or your Provincial or Territorial Student Assistance Office for additional details.

How it works

During periods of Interest Relief, you're not required to make payments on either the monthly interest or the outstanding principal of your loans. The government will pay the interest on your loans for you.

Interest Relief is granted for periods of 6 months, up to a maximum limit of 54 months.

If you decide to make either full or partial voluntary payments during periods of Interest Relief, these will be applied directly to your principal. (These payments aren't mandatory and they won't affect your current or future eligibility for Interest Relief.)

Eligibility rules for Interest Relief

To be eligible, you must meet all of the following conditions.

1. Your monthly gross family income must fall within the Maximum Income Guidelines.

2. You must reside in Canada. (If you're participating in an eligible international internship program or are a member of the Canadian Armed Forces stationed abroad, you are still considered to be residing in Canada.)

3. Your loan must not be in default. That means it must not be in collection with the Canada Revenue Agency or another collection agency. However, if you filed for bankruptcy on or after <st1:date month="5" day="11" year="2004">May 11, 2004</st1:date>, you may still qualify for Interest Relief even if your loan is in default.

4. You must have signed a Consolidated Loan Agreement for your Canada Student Loans. If you haven't done so, contact the NSLSC and/or your financial institution to request a Consolidated Loan Agreement.

5. You must meet all eligibility criteria in the month in which you apply.

Can I apply if I’ve missed scheduled loan payments?

Yes, but you will need to take care of any outstanding interest payments first. You can do this by either:

paying the outstanding interest

requesting that your Interest Relief period begin as of the month when you first missed payments (up to 6 months before the month you apply as long as you meet the income criteria)

requesting that up to 3 months of the unpaid interest be added to the principal of your loan (capitalized). This option can only be used once.

How do I apply?

Complete an Interest Relief application form and attach copies of the required supporting documentation. Send only photocopies of income and payment documentation with your application, because originals can't be returned.

To get the application form, phone the NSLSC at 1-888-815-4514 (if you use a TTY, it's 1-888-815-4556). If calling from outside North America, phone 800 2 225-2501. If you access your NSLSC Online Account, you can get an application containing the financial information for your loans managed by the NSLSC. You can print this, complete it and send it in.

How to apply depends on the circumstances of your loan(s):

If you have a Canada Student Loan or Integrated Student Loan through the National Student Loans Service Centre (NSLSC), then you should send your application to the NSLSC. (If you also have a Canada Student Loan with a Financial Institution, your application will also apply to that loan.) The NSLSC will contact your financial institution to get information concerning your loan.

If you're applying for Interest Relief for a Canada Student Loan negotiated before August 1, 2000 that is held by a financial institution (and you don't have a Canada Student Loan through the NSLSC), you must submit your application and supporting documentation to your financial institution directly.

If you have a provincial or territorial student loan, ask your Provincial or Territorial Student Assistance Office about any programs they have for students having trouble repaying their loans.

Introduced in Budget 2008, the TFSA is a new general-purpose tax-efficient savings vehicle for Canadians that complements existing registered savings plans for retirement and education like Registered Retirement Savings Plans (RRSPs) and Registered Education Savings Plans.

In short, the TFSA offers a flexible savings account that will allow Canadians to earn tax-free investment income to more easily meet lifetime savings needs.

The tax assistance provided by a TFSA is, in many ways, a mirror image of that provided through RRSPs:

RRSP contributions are tax-deductible, with both the contributions and the investment earnings taxable upon withdrawal.

TFSA contributions are made from after-tax income, with both the contributions and the investment earnings exempt from tax upon withdrawal.

How the Tax-Free Savings Account Will Work

Starting in 2009, Canadian residents age 18 or older will be eligible to contribute up to $5,000 annually to a TFSA, with unused room being carried forward.

Contributions will not be deductible.

Capital gains and other investment income earned in a TFSA will not be taxed.

Withdrawals will be tax-free.

Neither income earned within a TFSA nor withdrawals from it will affect eligibility for federal income-tested benefits and credits.

Withdrawals will create contribution room for future savings.

Contributions to a spouse’s or common-law partner’s TFSA will be allowed, and TFSA assets will be transferable to the TFSA of a spouse or common-law partner upon death.

Qualified investments include all arm’s-length RRSP qualified investments.

The $5,000 annual contribution limit will be indexed to inflation in $500 increments.

TFSA and Seniors

The TFSA will provide seniors with an effective savings vehicle to help meet any ongoing savings needs.

Based on current savings patterns, seniors are expected to receive one-half of the benefits provided by a TFSA.

In part, this is because neither the income earned in a TFSA nor withdrawals will affect eligibility for federal income-tested benefits and credits such as Old Age Security and Guaranteed Income Supplement benefits, and the Goods and Services Tax Credit.

TFSA and the Economy

Reducing the tax on savings is a powerful tool to support economic growth and improve the standard of living of Canadians. Since there will be no tax paid on the investment income in or withdrawals from these accounts, Canadians will have more incentive to save.

These savings will help increase the funds available for business investment. Over time, higher savings and investment will boost the potential of our economy.

In fact, economic analysis suggests that for every dollar reduction in the tax on savings, gross domestic product will increase by more than three dollars in the long run.

Top 10 Things to Know about the TFSA

The Tax-Free Savings Account lets you invest while not being taxed on interest or investment earnings.

You can contribute a maximum of $5000 a year. For example if you contribute $5,000 each year for 5 years you’d have more than $25,000 earning interest Tax-Free!

You can have more than one Tax-Free Savings Account and you can also have Tax-Free Savings Accounts with more than one financial institution. Like RSP’s you will need to keep track of how much you’ve contributed so you don’t exceed your limit (eg. $5,000 in 2009)

Unlike an RSP, you don’t have to pay any tax on money you take out of your Tax-Free Savings Account, and withdrawals from your Tax-Free Savings Account don’t affect your ability to qualify for Federal benefits like the Child Tax Benefit, Guaranteed Income Supplement, Old Age Security benefits, Age credit, or Goods and Services Tax credit – so you’re not penalized for saving.

You’ll be able to open savings accounts, GIC’s and mutual funds tax-free.

Unlike an RSP, money you put into your Tax-Free Savings Account will not be deducted from your income on your tax return.

Just like an RSP, when you file your tax return each year, the government will determine your remaining available Tax-Free Savings Account contribution limit for the coming year.

If you take money out of your Tax-Free Savings Account, you don’t lose the contribution room. You get it back in the following year. If you don’t make the maximum contribution you don’t lose the contribution room. The unused contribution room gets carried over to the following year. There is no limit to how much or how long contribution room can be carried forward.

You can open a Tax-Free Savings Account if you are 18 years of age and a Canadian resident.

The Tax-Free Savings Account comes to Canada January 1, 2009

A line of credit is a loan from the Bank. Unlike a regular loan for a fixed amount, the Bank doesn't provide you with the full amount of the loan at once. Instead, the Bank establishes a "credit limit" for you as the maximum amount you can borrow. As you withdraw, the available credit reduces. However, as you pay the money back, the amount available for withdrawal increases. You control how much of your credit limit you want to withdraw and when.

You may have both a Government Student Loan and a Student Line of Credit if you qualify.

The banks allow students to defer payment of principal for up to one year after graduation. Although you must make interest payments on the borrowed amount during this period, you have time to complete your studies and find employment before starting to repay the principal.

Scholarships can either be money you receive directly to assist with the costs of post-secondary education expenses, or credits for tuition or residence payments given directly to you. These monies issued like grants and bursaries, don't have to be repaid.

Most scholarships are awarded on the basis of excellence in a particular area such as academics or sports.

Visit CanLearn's Scholarship Search, to access Canada's largest collection of scholarships.

The Government of Canada provides scholarships and bursaries through the Canada Millennium Scholarships Program (including the Millennium Bursary, Excellence Awards and Access Bursary).

The Canada Millennium Scholarship Foundation has delivered more than half a million bursaries and scholarships worth more than $2.2 billion to students across Canada since 2000. The Canada Millennium Scholarship Foundation is a private, independent organization created by an act of Parliament in 1998. It encourages Canadian students to strive for excellence and pursue their post-secondary studies. The Foundation distributes $325 million in the form of bursaries and scholarships each year throughout Canada.

Other Scholarships and Bursaries

The Government of Canada is the largest provider of financial assistance to Canadian students, but there are also other scholarships and bursaries available to support post-secondary education.

Bursaries and Grants

A grant is funding given by governments to eligible students of certain groups who demonstrate need.

A bursary is money from governments, schools or private organizations that is given to students on the basis of financial need. Like grants, other factors such as good grades may play a role, too. Grants and bursaries do not have to be repaid.

The Government of Canada created The Canada Student Loans Program to make postsecondary education accessible to students attending a University, College, Trade School, or Vocational School, with a financial need, in attempt to ensure Canadians have the opportunity to develop the knowledge and skills needed to participate in the economy and society.

Depending on the school or program, tuition can cost between $2,500 and $8,000 a year or more.

Determine Your Eligibility

Canada Student Loans are available for full-time and part-time study at designated schools (including certain postsecondary institutions outside of Canada). To find out more about student financial assistance available in your province or territory of permanent residence or visit CanLearn.ca.

To be eligible for a Canada Student Loan as a full-time student, you must meet all of the following conditions:

You must be a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident of Canada, or be designated as a Protected Person.

You must be a permanent resident of a province or territory that issues Canada Student Loans.

You must demonstrate financial need.

You must be enrolled in at least 60 percent of a full course load (students with permanent disabilities must enrol in at least 40 percent of a full course load).

You must be enrolled in a degree, diploma or certificate program of at least 12 weeks of training and study within 15 consecutive weeks at a designated post-secondary educational institution.

You must pass a credit check if you’re 22 years of age or older and applying for a Canada Student Loan for the first time.

You must maintain a satisfactory scholastic standard if you’ve already applied for and received a Canada Student Loan.

Application Process

You must apply for the Canada Student Loan through your provincial or territorial student financial assistance office. Applications can be completed online in most provinces.

Applications are available through your high school, post-secondary institution or the Student Assistance Office of your province or territory of residence—many provinces and territories now offer online applications. In general, student loan applications are assessed within 4 to 6 weeks while online applications are often processed more quickly.

It is possible to obtain a full-time Canada Student Loan to attend a post-secondary institution outside of Canada if you plan on studying abroad. You must first contact your Provincial or Territorial Student Assistance Office to determine whether the institution you wish to attend is recognized as a Designated Institution.

Receiving Financial Assistance

A letter of assessment from the provincial or territorial student financial assistance office will be provided to you. Once you have received this assessment two things must happen:

1. Your school must confirm that you are enrolled.

The Certificate/Student Loan Agreement is valid for only 30 days from the date it is signed by your school and no later than the end of the month shown as the “Period of Study End Date”.

2. You must read, review, and sign your documents.

When you sign your loan document, you agree to be bound by those terms and conditions. They include important commitments, such as:

you agree to repay your loan (plus interest) beginning 6 months after your studies have ended or after you have left school

you agree to advise the NSLSC (for federal loans) of any change in contact information

you acknowledge that for 6 months after you have completed your studies or left school, you will not be required to make payments. Interest, however, will start to accumulate on your loans.

Bring your completed document to the NSLSC at either a Designated Canada Post Outlet or an on-campus NSLSC kiosk.

Normally, your loan amounts will be disbursed twice througout the year depending on the time you applied. 1 during your first term, and 1 during your second term.

Interest

Full-time students: Government student loan programs don’t charge interest until you have left school. Interest accumulates from the month after you leave school, but payments are only required 6 months after.

Part-time students: Interest accrues and must be paid on part-time Canada Student Loans while you're in school.

When you are ready to rid of that unneeded credit card, you may just want to do more than cut it in half. (...)

When you are ready to rid of that unneeded credit card, you may just want to do more than cut it in half.

Rob Cockerham from 20/20 decided to do his own experiement backed with a roll of tape, a digital camera, a blog, and a lot of irritation from those unsolicitated credit cards. In order to mimick ID theft, Rob did some reconstruction of the Chase MasterCard. , He changed the address on the application, to see if Chase would mail the card directly to an identity thief. And he used his cell phone number, much like a criminal would. He documented it all, mailed it all in and wondered what would happen.

You can imagine what happened next, the card was received in the mail not much longer.

Take a look at the video.

The credit card company defended itself by saying the address Cockerham used was a former residence tied to his name in their records and that regardless of the state of the application, Cockerham would have received the card anyway. Chase spokesman Paul Hartwick called Cockerham's Web site an "Internet prank." The company, he said, takes fraud detection seriously and employs 1,000 people to "protect our customers."

In the past, credit card companies have been known to issue credit cards in false names such as "Never Waste Trees", as well as issuing credit cards to children and pets.

Cockerham said he got an anonymous e-mail in response to his blog from a credit card industry worker with a confession: His employer tells him to approve literally everything — even applications that come in with the words "stop sending me these." The issuer figures the consumers might change their minds once they have their hands on the plastic, Cockerham relayed from the e-mail.

So for now, Cockerham has this advice for consumers who are equally frustrated by pre-approved credit card offers. Tearing them up, it seems, isn't good enough.

"You should probably buy a shredder today," he said.
