Credit Cards Going Green

Barclaycard Breathe:
- will only issue online statements
- all advertising for the credit card will also be done online
- old credit cards will go into a recycling scheme
- the cards themselves will be made out of PETG, a greener alternative to traditional plastic
- Breathe cardholders will receive discounts and lower-rate borrowing when they buy energy saving products or services, such as public transport tickets
- Barclaycard also promises to donate 50% of its after-tax profits from Breathe to environmental projects around the world that are dedicated to reducing carbon emissions
Wells Fargo
- added eco-friendly choices for its reward card holders
- use points to back renewable-energy projects (points ranging from 5,000 to 10,000), to support the development of green power
Bank of America and Citibank
- plan to add green points this year or next
Bright Planet
- will soon introduce Bright Card, which will benefit clean-energy projects
- Earn 1 EarthSmart™ point for every $1 spent in net retail purchases.
- Points are automatically redeemed monthly to help fund renewable energy projects.
- Every 1,000 points will fund an estimated 1 ton of carbon offsets.
- Every 1,000 points is roughly equivalent to taking a car off the road for 2,000 miles, or powering and heating/cooling your home for a month.
Bank of America's WorldPoints Rewards

- eventually card holders will be able to donate points to groups that invest in greenhouse gas reduction
